It rates how well each furniture material performs where it is actually used — scoring service life across six settings (residential and commercial, each outdoor to indoor) and hygiene across cleanability, sanitation, and odor — so the right material can be matched to each setting and use.



The best furniture material depends entirely on where it goes — an open patio, a covered porch or sunroom, or indoors — and whether the use is residential or commercial. Out on an open patio, exposure is harshest: aluminum and HDPE lead for frames, ipe for wood, solution-dyed acrylic for fabric, and reticulated foam for cushions. A covered patio or sunroom is gentler, so mid-grade materials — polypropylene, performance polyester, sealed oak — hold up fine for a home, though a business still leans on aluminum, HDPE, and acrylic. Indoors the split matters: hard materials like aluminum, steel, ipe, and HDPE run for decades even under commercial use, so for frames the deciding factor shifts from lifespan to cleaning, and shed-clean surfaces are what a restaurant, hotel, or office needs for daily sanitizing. Soft goods are the exception — even indoors, fabrics and cushion foams wear out on a replacement cycle rather than lasting for decades, and commercial use shortens even that. The constant: the rougher the exposure and the heavier the use, the more a material has to shed water and resist wear — and commercial use always pushes one tier above residential.

Hygiene is measured across three things — cleanability, resistance to mold, mildew, and bacteria, and odor — and turns on one property: whether a material sheds water and organics or holds them. Materials that shed (nonporous solids, hydrophobic fibers, draining foams) wipe or rinse clean, give microbes no foothold, and hold no smell; those that hold (porous, absorbent, or organic) stain, harbor growth, and keep odor. Ipe, HDPE, polypropylene, extruded aluminum, solution-dyed acrylic, and reticulated foam are hygienic by nature; performance polyester sheds soil and wipes clean too but holds odor sooner; oak and carbon steel are hygienic only while a finish stays intact; plywood, particle board, leather, and open-cell polyurethane foam are the weakest. Methodology

Each material is rated on two axes — service life and hygiene — as a raw material class, not as a finished product. Construction and finish shift the real-world result but do not change a material's underlying nature, so the ratings describe the material itself.

Service life is estimated from published engineering data — density and hardness, decay-resistance class, UV and moisture behavior, and water absorption — projected across a six-setting matrix: residential and commercial use, each in full-outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor exposure. Exposure and use intensity drive the figure. The same material can last generations indoors and fail in a season fully exposed, and commercial-frequency use shortens every figure by roughly a tier.

Hygiene is scored on three measures — cleanability, resistance to mold, mildew, and bacteria, and odor retention — drawn from standardized tests where available: stain release (AATCC 130), colorfastness to bleach, antimicrobial activity (ASTM E2149), fungal resistance, and, for foams, airflow, water absorption, and fluid retention. All three measures reduce to one property: whether a material sheds water and organics or holds them. Materials that shed — nonporous solids, hydrophobic fibers, draining foams — wipe or rinse clean and give microbes no foothold; materials that hold — porous, absorbent, or organic — stain, harbor growth, and retain odor.

Frames on an open patio or pool deck: Extruded aluminum lasts 15–25 years — nonporous and corrosion-resistant, it sheds sun, water, and pool chemicals with no maintenance. HDPE lasts 15–25 years — UV-stable and chemically inert, unaffected by chlorine or salt. Ipe lasts 40–50 years and is the only wood rated for uncovered exposure, on Class 1 decay resistance and near-nonporous density. Powder-coated steel lasts 8–15 years, but only while its coating stays unbroken; a single chip in a pool environment initiates rust. All three are nonporous or naturally decay-resistant and need no maintenance. Frames in a commercial outdoor setting: Ipe lasts 25–35 years — Class 1 decay resistance and near-nonporous density carry it through continuous exposure with no finish to maintain. Extruded aluminum lasts 10–16 years — nonporous, corrosion-resistant, and maintenance-free, it withstands weather and repeated sanitizing at volume.
